On August 12, 2025, local officials, transportation leaders, and community members gathered at the upgraded station to celebrate this important milestone and tour the new second train platform and upgraded boarding areas.

“This project is a crucial element of the RCTC’s vision to enhance commuter rail service and improve our region’s public transportation system,” said RCTC Chair and Riverside County Board of Supervisor Karen Spiegel. “Moreno Valley, Perris, Riverside, and the surrounding communities continue to grow, and this project prepares us for the future.”

Attendees were able to get an up-close look at the new train platform and new canopies, mini-high platform, emergency telephone, signage, and electronic displays. RCTC also upgraded 2 ½ miles of track for a future double-track corridor south of the station. Metrolink started service on the new platform on July 7, and these enhancements will help improve service and reliability on the 91/Perris Valley Line (PVL) in Riverside County and throughout the Metrolink network.

The Moreno Valley/March Field station is one of nine Metrolink stations in Riverside County that RCTC owns and operates. The delivery of this project signifies a new wave of planned improvements along the PVL designed to improve transit options for the residents of these growing communities. Future projects include the Metrolink Double Track Project, Perris-South Metrolink Station and Layover Facility, and the Mead Valley Metrolink Station and Mobility Hub.

RCTC, in partnership with Metrolink, has officially completed the Moreno Valley/March Field Station Improvements Project. On July 7, passengers were welcomed aboard with hot coffee, fresh pastries, and a brand-new train platform designed to improve the region’s passenger rail network.

“Metrolink stations are an important part of our communities, and improvements like this enhance the reliability and appeal of train travel for our residents,” said RCTC Chair and Riverside County Board of Supervisor Karen Spiegel. “I am thrilled the Moreno Valley/March Field Station Improvements Project is completed and I want to express my gratitude for the funding support from our federal partners, which made this project possible.”

Every year, numerous tragic railway related incidents occur throughout southern California including Riverside County. The sad truth is that most if not all these incidents are preventable by simply following basic safety guidelines. As we observe Rail Safety Month in September, RCTC continues to educate students and their families about rail safety by raising awareness about the dangers of railroad tracks and how we can all play a part in preventing these incidents.

With frequent freight and passenger trains traveling through Riverside County, rail safety is a priority for the various communities in our region. Whether on foot or in a vehicle, being on or near railroad tracks in areas other than designated rail crossings is not only illegal but also incredibly dangerous.

General Rail Safety Tips

Remember that trains approach faster and stop slower than they appear! Never overestimate how safe you are.

Always look both ways before crossing tracks. Always stay alert and eliminate distractions.

Always cross at designated crossings. Pay attention to and obey all warning signs and signals.

Never walk on tracks. It is illegal and highly dangerous.

Trains are big! They overhang tracks. Always stay at least 15 feet from the tracks.

Never stop your vehicle on the tracks. If you stall or get stuck, get all passengers out and then get help.

Trains always have the right-of-way, so get out of the way! Don’t speed to beat the train, just wait it out.

RCTC aims to reduce rail-related incidents by attending in-person events, providing rail safety presentations at schools and community centers, and through digital and social media campaigns. Join us in our effort to save lives by sharing the rail safety message with friends, family, and colleagues. Rail safety is a shared responsibility, and by following general safety tips, we can all help prevent incidents and protect our neighbors.

Let’s commit to keeping our communities safe together. Your promise to help each other stay alert, obey signals, and spread awareness makes all the difference. To view additional rail safety information, schedule a rail safety presentation, or take the rail safety pledge, please visit www.rctc.org/railsafety.

The weekend rail service shutdown is required for the Moreno Valley/March Field Station Improvements Project to ensure the safety of construction crews and the on-time completion of critical work. During the closure, crews will work at the station to extend the current platform, improve the pedestrian crossing, and upgrade drainage channels.

Construction on the Moreno Valley/March Field Station Improvement Project began in October 2022 and key elements include:

Adding a second passenger train platform

Extending the existing platform to accommodate the length of the standard Metrolink six-car trains.

Upgrading 2 ½ miles of track for the future nine-mile double-track corridor south of the station.

The Moreno Valley/March Field Improvement Stations Project is part of RCTC’s goal of increasing commuter rail service to relieve traffic congestion and improve air quality in the region. The project is also part of Metrolink’s Southern California Optimized Rail Expansion (SCORE) program, which aims to upgrade the Metrolink system in time for the 2028 Olympics and Paralympics Games.

Project funding is provided by a combination of local and federal transportation sources, including a $32 million Federal Transit Administration grant and Riverside County voter-approved Measure A.

The project is anticipated to be completed by spring 2024. For more information, please visit the project webpage at rctc.org/moval.

Riverside County is the fastest-growing county in California and the fifth fastest-growing in the country. These communities are ground zero for that growth.

The Mid County Parkway Ramona Expressway and Metrolink Double Track Project: Moreno Valley-Perris projects will allow better access to multimodal transportation services such as bus and rail, provide safety improvements, and help improve air quality in our region. Project improvements include:

Increased Commuter Rail Service – enabling increased Metrolink service frequency by double tracking stretches of the 91/Perris Valley Line along the 215 corridor in Perris and Moreno Valley.

Improved Safety – reducing the high rate of collisions along dangerous stretches of Ramona Expressway by implementing safety improvements.

Bolstered Access to Transit Service – strengthening arterial connections so San Jacinto and Hemet Valley residents may better access the Metrolink 91/Perris Valley Line and other transit services.
