Metrolink has created an online tool, “How Full is My Train?” to allow riders to check recent ridership levels of a train they plan to ride and confirm they can maintain safe distances from others.

Metrolink’s goal is to keep ridership at or below 30 percent of the available seats per rail car to allow for up to six feet of distance between riders. Ridership is closely monitored on all trains so that when a train has consistently reached 30 percent ridership, Metrolink can add a passenger car or additional train service, as possible, to allow for social distancing.

If their travel plans are flexible, they may choose to take a train that usually has fewer people on it. In many cases, riders will be able to simply move to other cars if one car appears crowded.

“We know that safety is top of mind with our customers,” said Metrolink Board Chair Brian Humphrey. “Safety is foundational at Metrolink – and a shared responsibility. Riders are required to wear face coverings while on our platforms and on board our trains. This tool empowers the rider to practice social distancing.”

Enhancing cleaning protocols, including wiping down regularly touched surfaces such as doors, restrooms, headrests, armrests, handrails, tables and trash areas with disinfecting products, as well as daily use of electrostatic sprayers that mist hospital-grade disinfectant on all areas of train cars – especially helpful for hidden and hard-to-reach locations.

Introducing a new Clean Care Crew dedicated to cleaning and disinfecting trains throughout the day.

Installing hand sanitizer stations on each train car, and ensuring they are filled more often.

Requiring face masks and coverings for anyone aboard Metrolink trains and on Metrolink platforms and providing conductors with a limited supply of face masks for riders who have forgotten their face covering.

Continuing to reiterate guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and other health authorities on ways to keep themselves and others safe through personal hygiene and social distancing.

A plan to improve access to mass transit and promote economic recovery in communities near Metrolink’s 91/Perris Valley Line is in the works, due to the Federal Transit Administration’s award of a $700,000 grant on June 11 to the Riverside County Transportation Commission.

RCTC is one of 23 agencies nationwide and one of three in California to receive grant funding from the FTA Pilot Program for Transit Oriented Development. Applications were due in November.

The grant will allow RCTC to work with private sector partners and representatives from the cities of Perris, Riverside and Corona and the March Joint Powers Authority to create a strategic plan for transit-oriented development. The plan will focus on development within a five-mile radius of Metrolink stations that serve the 91/Perris Valley Line.

“As the owner and operator of nine Metrolink stations in Riverside County, RCTC will work closely with our public-private partners to make it easier to access our passenger rail network and to create vibrant stations with retail amenities,” said RCTC Chair and Wildomar City Council Member Ben J. Benoit. “This will create jobs and improve the overall mass transit experience for Metrolink riders and station neighbors,” he said.

RCTC will convene private sector and local agency partners during the next fiscal year to begin the study process.

The Riverside County Transportation Commission is taking actions to ensure continuity of service to the public and to protect the health and safety of its employees.

The Commission, which owns and operates the nine Metrolink stations in Riverside County, expanded its station cleaning efforts last week to a daily schedule, rather than every other day, which had been the previous cleaning schedule. Cleaning crews also began using a new federally approved disinfectant to sanitize frequently touched areas, such as ticket vending machines, railings, and elevator buttons. Hand sanitizer dispensers are being installed at each station this week.

“We recognize the growing concerns about the coronavirus and want all of our Metrolink riders and station users to be aware of the measures we are taking to help keep them safe and healthy,” said Commission Chair Ben J. Benoit, who also is a Wildomar City Council Member.

On board the trains, Metrolink is taking extra steps to protect against the spread of the virus. Learn more.

Did you know? One in five children are “food insecure” and seniors are especially at risk of food insecurity in the Inland Empire, according to Feeding America Riverside/San Bernardino, whose mission is to alleviate hunger. At Parkridge Elementary School in Corona, nearly 80 percent of the students come from low-income homes with limited resources to buy winter coats.

The Riverside County Transportation Commission staff and I-15 Express Lanes team members are helping families stay fed and warm with community service projects.

RCTC collected non-perishable items from staff members and donated 273 pounds of food to Feeding America on November 18, in time for Thanksgiving. The donations equated to 20 full grocery bags.

The Thanksgiving Food Drive is one of several activities that RCTC staff have undertaken this year to help the community. Staff also participated in a holiday toy drive for the Riverside University Health System-Behavioral Health Department, donated backpacks and school supplies to the Coachella Valley Rescue Mission, collected gently worn work attire for the UC Riverside R’Professional Career Closet, and sent travel-sized toiletry items to Operation: Care and Comfort to aid military troops serving overseas.

Skanska-Ames Joint Venture design-build team members are collecting new coats in all sizes for students ages 5 to 12. The team also is accepting coat donations from community members who wish to lend a hand. Donations are due by noon on December 18. For more information, contact Sunny Medrano at sunny.medrano@skanskaames.com.

Lined notebook paper? Check. Pens and pencils? Check. Pink erasers? Purple folder with a fuzzy unicorn? Camo-print backpack? Check, check and check! RCTC staff members gave a helping hand to the Coachella Valley Rescue Mission by shopping for school supplies and donating 24 brand new backpacks jam-packed with goodies for area children.

RCTC’s Sunshine Committee, formed in May, provides opportunities for staff to help communities in need across Riverside County.

CVRM offers emergency and temporary housing, food, vocational services and recovery treatment to thousands of men, women and children each year.

But wait, there’s more…

In May and June, staff donated gently used professional clothing to the UC Riverside R’Professional Career Closet to help students “dress to impress” during interviews, career fairs, and networking events. Sixty percent of UCR students are first-generation college students, many from low-income families with financial obstacles to buying new professional outfits. Staff members gave 70 items – skirts, shoes, slacks, suit jackets, dress shirts, ties, and blouses – some still with tags attached. Staff sorted and delivered the items to UCR before the end of the school year.

Throughout the year, employees also are giving “Minis for the Military,” travel-sized toiletry items to benefit Operation: Care and Comfort. Since May, staff has given 253 items, including lotion, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, toothpaste, lip balm, dental floss, sewing kits, and more to ship to troops serving overseas.

Coming this fall is a Thanksgiving Food Drive through Feeding America Riverside/San Bernardino, followed by a holiday toy drive and Christmas card recycling program.
