These SART extensions would construct a 3.44-mile section of the trail’s 110-mile planned alignment in Corona. The public is encouraged to comment on two draft environmental documents from April 24 to May 24, 2025.

The Santa Ana River Trail, a beloved route for cyclists across southern California, stretches from Huntington Beach to the National Forest boundary near Mentone in the San Bernardino Mountains. In a joint effort with RivCo Parks, RCTC is working diligently to close the gap in the SART system between Green River Road in Corona and the Hidden Valley Wildlife Area in Norco. Your feedback is crucial to this process.

The 3.44-mile extension under public review is just east of the Prado Dam. Key features of the project include constructing a Class I asphalt/concrete bicycle path with decomposed granite pedestrian and equestrian paths.

The public is encouraged to provide comments on the draft environmental document from October 8 to November 8.

A magnet for cyclists, runners, and walkers, the trail, also known as “the SART,” is envisioned to be the longest multi-use trail in southern California, stretching 110 miles from Huntington Beach to the National Forest boundary near Mentone. RCTC is working on multiple segments to fill gaps in the SART between Green River Road in Corona to the Hidden Valley Wildlife Area east of Norco.

The 1.7-mile trail segment that is undergoing public review runs along the western boundary of the golf club and includes portions of Chino Hills State Park with connections to the existing SART. Key features include a bridge over the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway tracks and a bridge over Aliso Creek to allow trail users to cross safely over the tracks and the creek. The proposed project features a dual-track Class 1 multi-use path and natural surface trail.

RCTC is working on multiple segments to fill gaps in the SART between Green River Road in Corona to the Hidden Valley Wildlife Area east of Norco.

RCTC has been coordinating with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to develop a one-mile segment of the trail referred to as “Phase 4” between West Rincon Street and Butterfield Drive, just east of the Corona Municipal Airport and adjacent to Butterfield Park. Work on the trail is expected to start this fall and continue until 2023.

Longer term, RCTC is conducting engineering and environmental studies for a segment of the trail known as “Phase 6.” This two-mile phase is adjacent to the Green River Golf Club and includes portions of Chino Hills State Park with connections to the existing SART. Key features include a bridge over the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway tracks and a bridge over Aliso Creek to allow trail users to cross safely over the tracks and the creek. The draft environmental document is expected to be available for public comments this summer, and construction could start about two years later. This 11 million construction segment is funded by the Proposition 84 State Coastal Conservancy.

Pending the completion of these studies, construction could start as early as 2023.

The Point: Project would add 13 miles to the existing trail system between Eastvale and Corona

Heads up, cyclists, runners, walkers and equestrians: Environmental studies are nearing completion for a 13-mile extension of the Santa Ana River Trail. RCTC is working with the Riverside County Regional Park and Open-Space District, the US Army Corps of Engineers, the County of Riverside, the City of Corona, the City of Norco and the City of Eastvale to expand this popular trail.

The Draft Environmental Document is expected to be available for public review this spring. If environmental approvals are secured, work could begin on the first of five phases of the project later this year. Phase 1 proposes to extend the existing trail at the end of Dearborn Street/Grapewin Street in Eastvale west approximately 1.2 miles to connect with the trail along the northbound side of River Road.

To receive notice when the environmental document is ready for review or to receive other project updates, please email info@rctc.org.
