Riverside County transit riders are invited to take part in two initiatives designed to gather ideas on how service can be improved.

In the Coachella Valley, SunLine Transit Agency has launched Rides Reimagined – an initiative to rethink its bus network across the growing Coachella Valley and better meet the region’s changing needs. With the feedback of the community, the plan aims to improve access to jobs, schools, healthcare, and everyday destinations while using resources more effectively and creating a more convenient transit experience. With ridership trends shifting in recent years, SunLine is asking residents to share their travel needs and priorities to help guide future service design, including how to balance frequent service in high-demand areas with broader geographic coverage. Take the online survey and share your feedback.

RTA is asking riders and residents to share their feedback on what would make transit better for their communities by submitting a comment at OurVisionForward@RiversideTransit.com. This input will inform improvements to routes, service quality, the overall transit experience, and help RTA develop a 10-year transit plan to guide service changes and prepare for future growth. RTA will be launching the next phase of the project soon with new ways to provide feedback and encourages residents to sign up for project updates to stay informed.

More than one billion people all over the world participate in Earth Day activities. Joining in the celebration are the numerous public transit service providers across Riverside County. On Earth Day, these Riverside County service operators offer free rides to encourage residents to use the bus and train. By ditching the car keys and taking public transportation, you can help reduce traffic congestion while enjoying convenient methods of travel.

During its June 12 meeting, the Commission approved RCTC’s allocation of $6.4 million in LCTOP funding to eligible Riverside County transit operators. An additional $1 million in LCTOP funding is being provided directly to transit operators from the state, for a total funding amount of $7.5 million.

California’s LCTOP program, developed to provide operating and capital assistance for transit agencies, aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve mobility with a priority on serving disadvantaged communities. The LCTOP program supports a variety of initiatives, including new or expanded bus or passenger rail services, expansion of intermodal (multiple modes of transportation) transit facilities, equipment acquisition, and more, with each project reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

These funds have been allocated toward a variety of approved transit programs, such as Metrolink’s popular Student Adventure Pass Program, which allows any student with a valid student ID to travel anywhere on the Metrolink system free of charge. The program also helps fund Riverside Transit Agency’s (RTA) 25 Cent Fare Program – offering customers rides anywhere RTA buses go for just a quarter. In the Coachella Valley, transit riders will also benefit as a portion of program funds will go toward SunLine Transit Agency’s free fare days.

LCTOP helps fund Metrolink’s Student Adventure Pass Program, RTA’s 25 Cent Fare Promotion, and SunLine’s Countywide Free Fare Days

This round of LCTOP funding not only helps provide discounted fares for students, seniors, veterans, and riders with disabilities, the program also allocates additional improvements to bus and rail services throughout the county. As part of planned service enhancements, Metrolink will be increasing train frequency and optimizing train schedules later this year.

Each year, the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund provides funding for LCTOP based on population and revenues. RCTC then works closely with local transit agencies to program these funds, ensuring they are used adequately for operational and capital needs, thereby helping transit riders and meeting the program’s goals.

Map of Metrolink stations closed June 22-23, 2024

Construction of the Moreno Valley/March Field Station Improvement Project began in October 2022. Previous project work has included train switch upgrades, signal enhancements, drainage improvements, and track upgrades. Once completed, key elements of the project will include:

Addition of a second passenger train platform;

Extension of the existing platform to accommodate the length of the standard Metrolink six-car trains; and

Upgrade of 2 ½ miles of track for the future nine-mile double-track corridor south of the station.

The Moreno Valley/March Field Improvement Stations Project is part of RCTC’s goal of expanding passenger rail service to relieve traffic congestion and improve air quality in the region. The project is also part of Metrolink’s Southern California Optimized Rail Expansion (SCORE) program, which aims to upgrade the Metrolink system in time for the 2028 Olympics and Paralympics Games.

Project funding is provided by a combination of local and federal transportation sources, including a $32 million Federal Transit Administration grant and Riverside County’s voter-approved Measure A.

The project is anticipated to be completed in fall 2024. For more information, visit the project webpage at rctc.org/moval.

Recently launched on-demand microtransit programs from Riverside County transit providers have riders excited – and for good reason. With a few taps of a smartphone app or a short phone call, riders can plan and book rides to bus stops, schools, local businesses, doctor appointments, and other popular destinations. These rides are often less expensive than common ride-hailing apps allowing for residents from underserved communities to also use the service.

GoMicro, the popular on-demand microtransit service from Riverside Transit Agency (RTA), offers shared rides in the Hemet-San Jacinto microtransit zone that overlays existing RTA fixed routes. The GoMicro service made its much-anticipated debut in December 2022, providing nearly 3,000 rides in its first 30 days of service. Booking a ride is as easy as downloading the RTA GoMicro Transit App, creating an account, and requesting a pickup. Trips can also be booked through the GoMicro webpage or by calling 951-633-2629. GoMicro service operates Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

RTA’s GoMicro exceeds 2,800 boardings during the first 30 days of service with a peak of 217 daily rides

GoMicro’s surging popularity has prompted the need for additional funding to extend the service. Earlier this year, RCTC worked closely with RTA to assemble a grant application for the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) Regional Early Action Planning (REAP 2.0) grants program. As a result of the joint effort, a $2,378,635 grant was awarded that will allow RTA to extend the pilot program an additional 12 months and to implement similar on-demand microtransit service in other areas in the region.

In the sunny Coachella Valley, SunLine Transit Agency’s microtransit service – SunRide – has also proven to be a popular option amongst riders. The on-demand service launched in two Coachella Valley zones and has recently expanded service to seven zones that includes Cathedral City, Coachella, Desert Hot Springs-Desert Edge, Indio, Mecca-North Shore, Palm Desert, and Palm Springs. SunRide connects riders to SunLine’s fixed route network and serves more than 100 destinations that include John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital, DMV, schools, parks, and shopping centers. Riders can plan, book, and keep track of trips through the official SunRide mobile app or by calling SunRide Customer Service at 760-343-3450. The service is currently available Monday through Friday, 5:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
