The Point: Public transit agencies will commemorate Rosa Parks’ birthday on February 4 with free bus and train rides

On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks was arrested for disobeying an Alabama law that required Black bus riders to give up their seats to white riders, igniting the Montgomery Bus Boycott and ultimately ending segregation on transit systems across the country.

Parks said, “People always say that I didn’t give up my seat because I was tired, but that isn’t true… No, the only tired I was, was tired of giving in.”

To honor Rosa Park’s fight for civil rights, we celebrate Transit Equity Day on February 4, her birthday. This Transit Equity Day, transit agencies across southern California will offer free rides to promote equitable access to transit:

Rosaparks

Metrolink: No fare is required on February 4. Hop on the train to ride anywhere in the five-county system. Ticket vending machines will alert passengers that rides are free of charge.

Corona Cruiser: No fare is required through June 30, 2023. Thanks to California’s SB1 Low-Carbon Transit Operations Program, the city of Corona is offering free rides.

Banning Connect Transit: The city of Banning is offering free fares on Transit Equity Day.

San Bernardino County: San Bernardino County transit operators, including Omnitrans, Mountain Transit, Basin Transit, Needles Area Transit, and Victor Valley Transit Authority, will be offering free rides.
